The Labor Unit within the State Services Section is seeking a Senior Paralegal to join its dedicated team serving the people of Colorado. The Unit provides general counsel to three key state agencies: the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE), the Colorado Department of Personnel and Administration (DPA), and the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Board of Assessment Appeals (BAA). Our work spans a broad range of responsibilities, including representing our clients in litigation in state, federal, and administrative courts at the trial and appellate levels. The Unit also advises clients on day-to-day legal issues, board representation, open meetings and open records matters, rulemaking, and drafting both formal and informal legal opinions.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

This position supports Labor Unit attorneys across all aspects of their legal work while also handling key office management and organizational tasks. Responsibilities include researching, reviewing, organizing, and drafting legal pleadings; coordinating directly with clients and opponents and drafting pleadings, settlement memos, and settlement agreements in enforcement matters; drafting aspects of pleadings and appellate briefs like tables of contents and authorities and analyzing appellate and civil procedure rules to ensure compliance therewith; and verifying factual and procedural information. The role also involves assisting with witness preparation for hearings, depositions, interviews, and other trial-related needs, as well as supporting attorneys in presenting evidence before the Office of Administrative Courts and in state and federal district courts. Additionally, this position serves as a liaison among attorneys, client agencies, pro se litigants, witnesses, other Department of Law units, the Office of Administrative Courts, and state and federal trial and appellate courts.
This recruitment may be used to fill other Legal Assistant II positions at the Department of Law, State Services Section.

Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Salary will be paid on a biweekly basis.

Minimum Qualifications:  Please document all relevant experience in detail on your application. Experience will not be inferred or assumed. Any part-time experience listed will be prorated.

Minimum qualifications are:

  • Three years of work experience in a paralegal capacity which must have included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents, and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.

OR

  • Paralegal certificate obtained through either an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal studies program or an accredited institution AND one year of work experience in a paralegal capacity which must have included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents, and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.
  • A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school may substitute for the required certificateIf qualifying under the substitution, you are required to provide a copy of your transcripts at the time of application (we accept unofficial transcripts).

Note: Candidates possessing a foreign degree must submit a translation (evaluation) of their degree from an accredited institution, such as The National Association of Credential Evaluations Services in order to be given credit for the degree.   • Recent work experience beyond one year of supporting multiple attorneys
  • Experience with ProLaw or a similar case management system
  • Experience with Google Workspace
  • Experience working with matters related to state government and/or labor laws
  • Experience organizing and managing multiple projects simultaneously including managing multiple hard deadlines
