Credit repair and related businesses provide services for people seeking to improve their credit record, history, or rating. These types of service providers must file notification with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office before entering into agreements with Colorado residents. Review the information below about credit repair services regarding disclosure and fees under the law. If a credit services provider has violated your rights under the Colorado Credit Services Organization Act, you are entitled to sue the company and may be entitled to recover damages.

Important Information to Consider about Credit Repair:

A credit report is a collection of information about how a consumer managed credit and other financial accounts over time. This information is often calculated into a three-digit score used by banks and other companies to help assess the risk of lending or doing business with a consumer. Typically, the higher the credit score, the more likely a consumer will be approved for loans and receive lower interest rates. Consumers with lower credit scores may be more likely to pay higher interest rates on loans or be denied for loans altogether. Other businesses including landlords, insurance companies, and utility or telecommunications companies, may also use credit reports and/or scores when making decisions about current and prospective customers. For example: auto insurance companies also use credit scores to determine how much to charge consumers for premiums. Generally, consumers can build or improve credit histories by making on-time payments on active credit accounts (such as loans and credit cards), reducing overall debt balances, paying off derogatory debt, and disputing inaccurate information

Are credit repair companies required to be licensed to do business in Colorado?

As of July 1, 2025, Credit Repair companies are required by law to obtain a notification from the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.

Per section 5-19-110 of the Colorado Credit Services Organization Act, on and after July 1, 2025, a person shall not act as a credit services organization, directly or indirectly, without notifying the Administrator. Credit services organizations shall file a notification with, and pay the fee prescribed to the administrator within thirty days after commencing business in this state.

Can consumers repair their own credit?

Consumers can check their credit report and dispute inaccurate information for free. The three major credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax and Transunion – all have the same procedure in place for consumers to review their credit report and dispute inaccurate information. Disputed items are then either verified as correct, updated with accurate information, or removed if they are found to be inaccurate or if they cannot be verified. The credit bureaus have 30-45 days to complete the investigation and send an updated copy of the credit report to the consumer. Disputing inaccurate information does not guarantee improvements to one’s credit history because any negative credit information that can be verified will remain.

Credit Services providers must supply the following information to consumers:

Notice of Cancellation Procedures
Written disclosures detailing a consumer’s rights under Federal and State law, prior to enrolling a consumer in the program.

Written contracts to enrolled consumers, which must include:
- Terms and conditions of payment, including the total of all payments made by the buyer;
- A full and detailed description of the services to be performed;
- All guarantees of full or partial refunds;
- The estimated date by which the services are to be performed;
- A list of the adverse information appearing on the consumer’s credit report that; is to be modified and a precise description of each modification.

Credit Services providers may not:

Charge any money until credit services are full and complete

Make untrue statements to credit reporting agencies
