Attorney General Phil Weiser’s statement regarding U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the addition of citizenship question to the 2020 census

June 27, 2019 (DENVER, Colo.) — In January, Colorado joined the multistate lawsuit U.S. Department of Commerce v. New York to challenge the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 census. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser released the following statement regarding today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision:

“By recognizing that the government did not truthfully explain why it sought to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, the U.S. Supreme Court has made it clear that the rule of law must be followed.

“This decision is a victory for our nation and for Colorado since the census will have a direct impact on our state’s representation in Congress and our fair share of federal dollars for transportation, healthcare, education, public safety, and many public assistance programs.

“It is now our responsibility to educate the public about the importance of an accurate count, and we must redouble our efforts to ensure that every person is counted in Colorado.”
