Statement from Attorney General Phil Weiser on the selection of a new Aurora police chief

Aug. 22, 2024 (DENVER)–Attorney General Phil Weiser released the following statement regarding the selection of Todd Chamberlain as the new Aurora police chief:

“I congratulate Todd Chamberlain on his selection as the new chief of the Aurora Police Department. I expect that he is fully committed to the improvements that are mandated by the consent decree. We are now in the monitoring phase of the consent decree that follows significant changes to policies and related training. Implementing these changes requires stable leadership.

“I have no doubt that Chamberlin will protect public safety and work to build trust between law enforcement and the community. From what we have learned and experienced over the last few years, however, it is clear to me that Aurora must have an independent police monitor in place when the consent decree expires. A permanent structure for independent review of the police department would help ensure that reform, accountability, and transparency continue, and that the city is responsive to community concerns.

“Upon his appointment, I look forward to working with Chief Chamberlain to ensure compliance with the consent decree and improved community safety.”
