Attorney General Weiser commemorates Babi Yar massacre, links Holocaust to modern antisemitism

Sept. 25, 2025 (DENVER) – Attorney General Phil Weiser joined leaders from the Jewish community and others at the Babi Yar Memorial Park today to commemorate the anniversary of one of the largest mass murders at a single location during the Holocaust.

At the annual event, hosted by the Mizel Museum, Attorney General Weiser delivered a poignant keynote address titled “From Babi Yar to Boulder: Confronting Antisemitism with Moral Clarity,” which connected the recent attack this year on Jewish people in Boulder to the Babi Yar massacre and the Holocaust.

“From the ravine at Babi Yar to incidents of hate right here in Boulder and beyond, we must remain vigilant,” Attorney General Weiser told the crowd. “Remembrance is not just about honoring the past—it’s about how we shape the future.”

Read the attorney general’s full remarks.

Attorney General Weiser’s personal connection to the Holocaust lent gravity to the ceremony. His mother, one of the youngest living survivors, was born in the Buchenwald concentration camp and was liberated the next day by the U.S. Army.

On September 29–30, 1941, nearly 34,000 Jews were executed at the Babi Yar ravine near Kyiv in Nazi-occupied Ukraine—one of the largest mass murders at a single location during World War II. Between 1941 and 1943, thousands more, including Jews, Roma, Communists, and Soviet prisoners of war, were tragically also murdered there, increasing the estimated total death toll to be over100,000 individuals. Millions more Jews and other ethnic minorities were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Denver’s Babi Yar Memorial Park honors those victims.
