Statement from Attorney General Phil Weiser on the beating death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tenn.

Jan. 28, 2023 (DENVER)–Attorney General Phil Weiser issued a statement following the release of body-camera footage in the beating death of Tyre Nichols:

“The brutal beating and killing of Tyre Nichols is horrifying. I am outraged, as we all should be, by this abuse of power and trust by officers sworn to serve and protect the community. My heart is with the family of Tyre Nichols, and I pray that his memory may be a blessing.

“This is a deeply painful reminder and a further call to action. We have more work to do to improve the criminal justice system. I am committed to this important work, as is the Department of Law and POST. We know that every person and every community deserves safety from danger and safety from injustice. We must be able to depend on and trust our peace officers to deliver that, and our work will never be done until we have achieved it.”
