The Business & Licensing section of the Colorado Department of Law is seeking a public service-driven attorney who would enjoy a combined litigation and general counsel role for its Medical Unit. The Medical Unit protects Coloradans by assisting the state in licensing and regulating physicians and other professions. More specifically, this Unit takes disciplinary action against licensees and litigates against unlicensed individuals who practice in the healthcare industry. By overseeing these professions, the Medical Unit protects the public health and safety of our citizens. WHAT YOU WILL DO

Our new team member will practice administrative law before the Office of Administrative Courts, as well as in state and federal district and appellate courts. While this attorney’s primary role will be to serve as litigation counsel to the Medical Board, this role will also serve as litigation and general counsel to our other clients. In addition to the Medical Board, the Unit also currently represents the Colorado Podiatry Board; State Personnel Board; Division of Conservation; Office of Speech-Language Pathology Certification; Healthcare Professions Profile Program; Colorado Long-Term Care Ombudsman and PACE Ombudsman; the Office of Radon Professionals; and the Natural Medicine Advisory Board.

This attorney will also do most, if not all, of the following:

  • Independently handle litigation, negotiation, administrative hearings, and appeals;
  • Litigate matters that require immediate action, including prosecuting license suspensions; advising the Medical Board’s Inquiry and Licensing Panels;
  • Enforce the Medical Practice Act against unauthorized persons through actions for injunctive relief in district court;
  • Provide general counsel and legal advice to client agencies;
  • Advise clients in all aspects of its regulatory functions and responsibilities, including open meetings and open records laws;
  • Assist with the promulgation of rules and review of their constitutionality; and
  • Collaborate with other attorneys in the Medical Unit and in the Section.

This recruitment may be used to fill multiple attorney positions in the Department of Law.

Salary note: The Department of Law uses a wage progression compensation model. Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.  

New ranges will go into effect for employees starting after July 1, 2023.  

Attorneys with less than 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney will be hired as an Assistant Attorney General I (AAG I). The salary range for an AAG I is $83,292-$92,400/annually. 

Attorneys with more than 3 years of experience practicing as an attorney will be hired as an Assistant Attorney General II (AAG II). The AAG II salary range is $96,420-$120,000/annually. 

Current salary range is $7,100-9,000/month through June 30, 2023. 

Salary will be paid on a biweekly basis for any new employees starting after July 1, 2023

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Medical Unit is made up people who enjoy working together and with clients, who care about protecting Coloradans, and who litigate challenging and often novel trial and appellate issues. Candidates should have a: 1) strong litigation background; 2) demonstrated ability to handle negotiations, litigation, and trials independently and effectively; 3) experience or capacity to manage a caseload autonomously; 4) proficient client communication and negotiation skills; 5) excellent writing skills; and 6) demonstrated commitment to public service and diversity, equity, and inclusion.A background in healthcare is also helpful, as is work with experts in the nursing or medical fields. The ideal candidate will be skilled at developing and maintaining strong client relationships; have a passion for litigation, trials, general counseling, and learning new areas of law and the healing arts; and demonstrate a strong commitment to serving the public interest.

Qualified applicants must be licensed to practice law in Colorado or be clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar. Candidates eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar will be required to submit proof of their completed application before the first day of employment.
