The Colorado Department of Law invites applications for a Deputy Attorney General, a role which offers a unique leadership opportunity with statewide impact. We are looking for a dynamic and attorney to lead our State Services section. This section is made up of a diverse team of professionals who work to protect children, people at risk, and represents the public at large. The legal work of the Section is diverse, ranging from providing advice on transactions and general operations to defending the constitutionality of state laws in both state and federal court.  The Deputy also serves as a member of the office-wide leadership team, therefore we are seeking an individual who will drive innovative leadership initiatives and help implement the vision and values for the Department of Law.

WHAT YOU WILL DO 
The State Services section protects children, people at risk, and represents the public at large. Through eight different units, the section accomplishes work related to elected public officials, health care, education, human services, public utilities, and procurement. Examples of the work of this section includes representing the Colorado Department of Human Services and all of its various divisions, defending findings of child abuse and neglect made by county human services departments, and prosecuting licensing actions against childcare providers and substance disorder treatment providers; providing legal advice and representation to the Public Utilities Commission and their advisory staff members regarding electricity, gas, telecommunications, transportation, railroad, and water and gas pipeline safety matters; representing the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing which administers the Medicaid program, the Children’s Health Plan and Colorado Indigent Care Program, and the Colorado Department of Health and Environment on public health matters; providing counsel and representing the public institution of higher education in litigation and other maters, serving as counsel to subdivisions of Colorado Government responsible for K-12 education, including the State Board of Education and; providing counsel to and representing the four statewide elected officials, as well as the Judicial Department, the Department of Local Affairs, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, the State Auditor, the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, and the Office of Information Technology, and litigating complex civil cases that often involve legal questions of first impression and public policy matters; advising and representing institutions of education; conserving the state’s fiscal system by reviewing hundreds of state contracts and contract amendments for compliance with State laws and fiscal rules and much more.

The Deputy of the State Services Section leads and manages the overall work of the section, which includes developing a supportive and inclusive culture in line with the vision and values of the Department of Law; considering diversity, equity, and inclusion in decision-making; and fostering collaboration, teamwork, and professional development for staff. Responsibilities include overseeing the legal work of section attorneys; supervising attorneys, managing personnel, and hiring attorneys and employees within the State Personnel System; implementing performance management and planning; prioritizing work for and delegating work to attorneys and staff; developing the section’s strategic plan; working with the Attorney General on policy development, legislation, and media relations; and preparing monthly, annual, and fiscal year reports on section activities.

The Deputy collaborates with clients and attorneys throughout the office on a wide variety of legal issues and strategy and may assist in general counsel work, rulemaking, and legislative review. The Deputy also serves as a member of the Attorney General’s leadership team and will be an integral part of developing and implementing the Attorney General’s vision for the Department of Law.

The Department of Law may fill additional leadership positions from this recruitment.

Salary Note: 

The Department of Law uses a wage progression compensation model. Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

New ranges will go into effect for employees starting after July 1, 2023. Current salary range is $15,154/month through June 30, 2023.

Salary will be paid on a biweekly basis for any new employees starting after July 1, 2023.

Applicants for the Deputy Attorney General position must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be admitted to the Colorado bar or be clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar and be in good standing at the time of application. Applicants eligible to waive into the bar must be eligible to Practice Pending Admission.
  • Have 10 years of experience as a practicing attorney that includes practice management, significant complex litigation or general counsel experience
  • Have personnel management and supervisory experience
