The DOL is currently offering a sign-on bonus for new paralegal hires of $1,000.
Sign-On bonuses will be paid based on the following timeline:
$500.00 – Time of hire
$500.00 – Time of certification (typically 12 months after hire)

 

This position is open only to Colorado state residents.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Antitrust Unit exists to investigate and bring civil lawsuits for violations of the Colorado Antitrust Act of 1992 (“Antitrust Act”), § 6-1-1101, et seq., CRS (2006).  The attorneys and legal assistants prepare the enforcement actions including but not limited to complaints, other disciplinary actions such as letters of admonition, assurances of discontinuance, settlement agreements, and final orders. The unit also drafts and assist in legislative initiatives and participate in miscellaneous antirust and consumer protection business related projects.

The Senior Paralegal in the Antitrust Unit provides professional and technical assistance to the unit’s attorneys as well as other units in the Consumer Protection section. This position will provide litigation support, trial preparation and assistance as well as interact with other legal representatives and the public.

These duties include but are not limited to:

 Litigation Support

  • Prepare, review, and edit pleadings including answers, motions to dismiss, and other routine motions, includes cite checking of briefs.
  • Draft initial correspondence to opposing counsel, clients, witnesses, and others.
  • Interview complainants and other witnesses and preparation of interview reports and affidavits.
  • Prepare disclosures and discovery requests; deposition summaries and document review.
  • Coordinate with attorneys and employees for purposes of preparing responses to discovery requests from opposing parties.
  • Manage, index, and catalog documents and coordinating both offensive and defensive document productions
  • Keep track of deadlines and setting up litigation timelines.
  • Arrange for service of process of subpoenas and Complaints.
  • E-file court documents and filing of pleadings with appropriate courts.
  • Assist attorneys in their preparation for hearings and trials, create and organize trial notebooks and electronic exhibit presentations and coordinating with court personnel.
  • Prepare settlement documents and coordinate approval and execution of settlement documents.
  • Coordinate issuance and distribution of settlement payments.
  • Communicate with courtroom staff prior to trial and setting up relevant technology.

Discovery

  • Coordinate with attorneys to determine if production is complete and may also undertake substantive review of produced documents.
  • Determine whether documents should be loaded to eDiscovery platform and helps to determine a strategy for team review of the documents.
  • Decide what type of cases, statutes, rules, or law may be most helpful to address or resolve the legal issue presented.
  • Decide and assist in what information to include in discovery requests and responses.

Case Management 

  • Determine what documents must be produced under CORA.
  • Determine what documents exist for potential production and how to locate those documents when conducting defensive discovery.
  • Determine the most efficient method of storing electronic case file documents, including learning relevant technology tools to accomplish this.
  • Maintain case files and relevant outside correspondence.
  • Determine efficient methods of managing individual cases and strategies to improve efficiency and effectiveness of litigation strategy and execution and to ensure that attorney-client advice is easily retrievable in the future.

Legal and Investigative Research

  • Determine the approach and method to answer legal and factual research questions.
  • Decide relevance of facts and research discovered to the question at hand.

Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

 

Minimum Qualifications and Substitutions:  Please document all relevant experience in detail on your application. Experience will not be inferred or assumed. Any part-time experience listed will be prorated.

 

Qualified applicants must have:

 

  • Three years of work experience in a paralegal capacity which must have included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents, and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.OR

 

  • Paralegal certificate obtained through either an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal studies program or an accredited institution AND one year of work experience as a paralegal which must have included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.

           OR

  • A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school AND one year of work experience as a paralegal which included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.

    Note: 
    Candidates possessing a foreign degree must submit a translation (evaluation) of their degree from an accredited institution, such as The National Association of Credential Evaluations Services in order to be given credit for the degree.

Required Competencies: 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Effective oral and written communication with internal and external customers
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills
  • Ability to research, analyze, and compile data
  • Time-management skills, including the ability to multi-task and effectively manage competing priorities to meet tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the minimum qualifications, if you possess any of the following specifically include the details on your application. This information will be used to assess your qualifications and may be used to determine a top group of applicants.  

 

  • Extensive paralegal experience that includes conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents, and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.
  • Ability to finalize pleadings including tables of content in preferred citation format
  • Experience supporting attorneys with case management
  • Strong litigation skills
  • High proficiency in Excel
  • Experience reviewing documents, discovery, and disclosures
  • Familiarity with e-filing systems employed by various courts
  • Experience working in a government or public service setting
  • Familiarity with ProLaw or similar case management and billing system
  • Experience working in a paralegal capacity for the State of Colorado

  • The selected candidate must be willing to travel in the United States occasionally.
