Colorado Kids MoneyWi$er™

“I want every child in our State to have the skills they need to confidently navigate the increasingly complex financial world we live in,” said Attorney General Coffman. “Providing young people an early financial education fosters individual responsibility and lays a solid foundation for success in life.”

Learning the basics of finance is an important step in our students’ futures. Topics such as how to build credit and budget expenses are a few other examples of the knowledge critical in creating a financially sound future.  Teaching principles like these to children at an early age will help prevent them from making uninformed financial decisions in the future and give them an opportunity for the solid financial future that every child deserves.

In order to provide Colorado Kids MoneyWiser™ to schools across the State at no-cost, the Attorney General’s Office has funded the program for the 2016-2017 school year using settlement funds designated for consumer protection education and other initiatives. The Colorado Kids MoneyWiser™ program is scheduled to run through at least the 2018-2019 school year.

HOW THE Colorado Kids MoneyWiser™ PROGRAM WORKS

The Colorado Kids MoneyWiser™ program is a 2.5 hour, interactive web-based course designed to introduce financial literacy skills early in a student’s development.  The curriculum aligns with both state and national standards published by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy. Students will earn a certification upon completion of the curriculum, signifying they have been taught these crucial financial concepts.

Colorado Kids MoneyWiser™ empowers students to be smart financial decision makers while they are early in their cognitive development. By leveraging performance-based games, MoneyWiser immerses students in real-life financial scenarios that focus on skill building and responsible decision making. Covering everything from goal setting to making a budget, MoneyWiser delivers critical financial concepts in an engaging and fun way. This platform can be integrated into unit plans and used during class time, as a capstone project, or in a flipped classroom.

"My class is so excited because they are receiving their certificates of completion as they are finishing up Colorado Kids MoneyWi$er.  I only have a few students left who need to complete level six.  I really liked it. One student had a lemonade stand and made $90.00. He was talking about his profit, less his supplies and I thought it was cool how he was using the correct language. Thank you for this opportunity and I hope it is something we can assess next year." -Michelle Grimes, 4th grade teacher
