The Consumer Protection Section, Consumer Fraud Unit is seeking a Paralegal to join our tight knit team of professionals. This position will offer the right candidate a variety of work, with half of the assignment working with section attorneys and state agency stakeholders to manage a heavy volume of fraudulent filings and the other half of the assignment more typical entry-level paralegal work. The right candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment where all team members are encouraged to innovate and contribute to Unit priorities. If you’re looking for an opportunity to learn multiple facets of the important work performed in the Consumer Fraud section while also enjoying some routine, process-oriented work, apply so we can learn more about you!
This position is open only to residents of Colorado.
The Consumer Fraud Unit enforces the Colorado Consumer Protection Act (“CCPA”), C.R.S 6-1-101 et seq. and other consumer protection statutes. From large multistate investigations into international corporations, to fly-by-night fraudsters targeting vulnerable populations, the Consumer Fraud Unit works hard to protect Coloradans against all manner of deceptive, fraudulent, and other unfair business practices. We investigate, we negotiate, we litigate, and we secure relief on behalf of consumers.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
This Paralegal position will be dedicated, 50% of the time, to providing professional and technical assistance to the Consumer Fraud (CF) unit attorneys by supporting the unit’s work relating to fraudulent entity filings with the Colorado Secretary of State. The Paralegal must have outstanding organizational skills to manage the heavy volume of fraudulent entity filings, which involves organizing files and documents, and tracking mailings to entities. The Paralegal also drafts standard template notices, works with CF attorneys to conduct additional investigation when necessary, and communicates with CF attorneys and the Secretary of State, as well as the public regarding the fraud filings work.
The other 50% of the job will involve supporting the Consumer Fraud unit and other units in the Consumer Protection (CP) section, including calendaring deadlines, formatting documents, providing general litigation support, preparing exhibits and notebooks for trial, assisting attorneys in managing discovery and reviewing evidence, performing document review and document management, and assisting with pretrial preparation, case management, and e-filing consistent with court rules and Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure.
This is a term-limited position that is expected to last no more than 18 months from the hire date. The successful candidate will be required to waive rights under the state personnel system.
Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
