The Consumer Protection Section is seeking a talented and enthusiastic attorney with significant experience in state and federal civil litigation to join our Consumer Fraud Unit. This position offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a lead litigator and mentor, focusing on investigating and litigating violations of civil consumer protection laws at the state and federal levels. From large multistate investigations into international corporations, to fly-by-night fraudsters targeting vulnerable populations, the Consumer Fraud Unit works hard to protect Coloradans against all manner of deceptive, fraudulent, and other unfair business practices. We investigate, we negotiate, we litigate, and we secure relief on behalf of consumers. This is a great position for an attorney interested in diverse and challenging work, and who wants to serve the public. This position is best suited for an attorney with strong communication skills who enjoys working collaboratively, mentoring attorneys and staff, and who excels at developing and implementing successful litigation strategies in complex cases.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Consumer Fraud Unit is expected to handle a full caseload and to lead investigations and enforcement actions while serving as a mentor to junior attorneys in the unit.
As the lead attorney assigned to a case, you will be responsible for creating and executing investigation plans, analyzing potential violations of consumer protection laws, negotiating settlements, and litigating cases in both state and federal court. You will also oversee the work of junior attorneys, paralegals, investigators, and other administrative personnel partnering on the case, and will frequently collaborate with other local, state, and federal agencies, as well as with other AAGs around the country. Our cases very greatly in size and complexity, and often involve extensive pre-filing investigations. The attorney in this position will be expected to successfully manage that full range of complexity. This attorney will also regularly interact with colleagues, members of the public, law enforcement, and fellow governmental agencies regarding the work of the Unit and create and deliver training to these entities when needed.
In this role as Senior Assistant Attorney General, you will also have the opportunity to:
- Litigate complex civil cases involving violations of the Colorado Consumer Protection Act and other state and federal consumer protection laws at all phases of litigation, including investigation, discovery, motions practice, trial, appeal, and settlement.
- Manage nationwide and local litigation to promote Colorado’s efficient and impactful participation in civil consumer protection cases throughout the United States.
- Participate in complex multi-state investigations, negotiations, and litigation on behalf of Colorado;
- Serve as a team lead for both investigations and litigation, overseeing other attorneys, investigators, paralegals, and others, while providing mentoring, coaching, and professional growth opportunities to those on your team;
- Research federal and state laws relating to our consumer protection claims to ensure that our investigations and litigation maintain a strong legal footing;
- Serve as a mentor and resource to junior attorneys in the unit, including, for example, providing guidance on investigation or litigation strategy and reviewing certain types of work product, including court filings in state or federal court;
- Travel (both within Colorado and nationwide) when needed for investigations, court appearances, hearings, and trials.
- Work alongside management to identify Unit training needs and improve structures and processes in the unit.
Salary Note: The Department of Law uses a wage progression compensation model. Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
In order to be appointed as a Senior Assistant Attorney General, candidates must have a minimum of ten years of experience as civil litigation attorney. If the position is filled at the level of Senior Assistant Attorney General, the pay range will be $106,309 to $146,455/year.
If the position isn’t filled as a Senior Assistant Attorney General, the pay range will be at that of Assistant Attorney General II, which is $99,318 to $132,901/ year.

Applicants must be admitted to the Colorado bar or be clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar and be in good standing at the time of application. For this Senior Specialist attorney position, we are seeking applicants who have a minimum of ten (10) years of demonstrated experience with civil litigation in state and/or federal court.
Applicants should highlight in their cover letter any civil litigation experience, including any experience with multistate litigation teams. Applicants are also encouraged to describe their experience mentoring lawyers and staff.
We are looking for a teammate who has excellent interpersonal and client relationship skills, who thrives in and enjoys fostering a collaborative and friendly work environment but who can also effectively work independently. The strongest candidates will also have:
- More than the minimum 10 years of civil litigation experience in state and/or federal court
- Experience leading both investigations and litigation
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle a large portfolio of cases with minimal supervision
- Strong organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple cases in various stages of litigation
- Strong litigation, analytical, research, and oral and written communication skills
- Significant experience in negotiating settlements and working with opposing counsel
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Experiencing mentoring others or successfully leading teams in a legal setting
- A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others
- Maturity and judgment when dealing with high-level stakeholders, including knowing when to consult teammates and supervisors
- The ability to be a self-starter who is capable of and enjoys working independently

The ideal candidate for this position should be comfortable overseeing assigned cases from intake through settlement or trial. Ideal candidates will be highly self-motivated, creative in thinking about litigation, and willing to aggressively litigate fraud cases. A successful candidate would be assigned their own caseload but would lead and mentor a team of attorneys, investigators, and paralegals and would interact with their team regularly.
