Description of Job
This position is open only to residents of Colorado.
The Consumer Fraud Unit enforces the Colorado Consumer Protection Act (“CCPA”), C.R.S 6-1-101 et seq. and other consumer protection statutes. From large multistate investigations into international corporations, to fly-by-night fraudsters targeting vulnerable populations, the Consumer Fraud Unit works hard to protect Coloradans against all manner of deceptive, fraudulent, and other unfair business practices. We investigate, we negotiate, we litigate, and we secure relief on behalf of consumers. This is a great position for those interested in diverse and challenging work, and who wants to serve the public.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Senior Paralegal in the Consumer Fraud Unit provides professional and technical assistance to the Unit’s attorneys as well as other units in the Consumer Protection section. Job duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Litigation Support
- Prepare, review and edit pleadings including answers, motions to dismiss, and other routine motions, includes cite checking of briefs (including Blue Book)
- Draft for review and signature by attorney’s motions, proposed orders and basic court filings
- Draft initial correspondence to opposing counsel, clients, witnesses, and others
- Interview complainants and other witnesses and preparation of affidavits
- Prepare disclosures and discovery requests
- Create deposition summaries and document review
- Organize and track complicated document productions (both incoming and outgoing)
- Coordinate with attorneys and employees to prepare responses to discovery requests from opposing parties
- Manage, index, and catalogue documents during investigations, and coordinate document production
- Calendar deadlines and set up litigation timelines
- Arrange for service of process of subpoenas and Complaints
- E-filing of court documents and filing of pleadings with appropriate courts, including in federal court
- Assist attorneys in preparation for hearings and trials, includes
- create and organization trial notebooks and electronic exhibit presentations
- coordinating with court personnel
- Assist attorneys during the course during hearings and trials, includes:
- manage witness and exhibits lists,
- coordinate with the court and other parties regarding trial technology and logistics
- assisting in trial presentation through the use of trial technology
- Prepare settlement documents and coordinate approval and execution of settlement documents
- Coordinate issuance and distribution of settlement payments
- Communicate effectively with attorneys and staff both within and outside the Colorado AG’s Office
Discovery
- Analyze, prioritize, categorize, and code discovery documents for entry into available databases
- Provide reproduction of requested documents
- Prepare reports, correspondence, affidavits, and memorandum regarding discovery issues and problems
Case Management
- Draft simple motions, proposed orders, affidavits, briefs or portions thereof, memos, correspondence, cease and desist and advisory letters, stipulations, and assurances of discontinuance
- Edit and proofread correspondence, motions, briefs, and other pleadings and documents
- Review case files, citations in briefs, sherardize cases, indexes and files pleading, maintains pleadings and case files
- Arrange for service of process of subpoenas/complaints, including copy of documents, mailing to appropriate law enforcement agencies, and payment of fees; and E-files documents with all appropriate courts
- Conduct the initial disclosure of evidence production and response to discovery request production.
- Maintain and organize case files.
Legal and Investigative Research
- Perform factual research to assist the unit’s attorneys in preparing case strategies
- Summarize and consolidate results of research and analysis by conferring with unit attorneys
- Drafting detailed and complete memoranda containing findings
- Find witnesses using investigative methods
Deadline Management
- Manage the scheduling deadlines of the court and calendaring all deadlines.
- Assist the litigation attorney to ensure that deadlines are met accordingly.
- Arrange depositions and interviews by telephoning witnesses, other counsel, reporters and courts
- Attends depositions and interviews
- take notes and gives comments to attorneys
- communicate orally and in writing with court personnel, witnesses, parties, counsel of record, and the public to obtain information
- keep interested parties and attorneys apprised of case development or status
- Locate documents and/or witnesses by utilizing public records and various information services
- Act as liaison with other state, local, and federal governmental agencies
Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
This recruitment may be used to fill other highly similar positions at the Department of Law, Consumer Protection Section.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Minimum Qualifications and Substitutions: Please document all relevant experience in detail on your application. Experience will not be inferred or assumed. Any part-time experience listed will be prorated.
Qualified applicants must have:
- Three years of work experience in a paralegal capacity which must have included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents, and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.OR
- Paralegal certificate obtained through either an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal studies program or an accredited institution AND one year of work experience as a paralegal which must have included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.
OR
- A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school AND one year of work experience as a paralegal which included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources.
Note: Candidates possessing a foreign degree must submit a translation (evaluation) of their degree from an accredited institution, such as The National Association of Credential Evaluations Services in order to be given credit for the degree.

Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the minimum qualifications, if you possess any of the following specifically include the details on your application. This information will be used to assess your qualifications and may be used to determine a top group of applicants.
- Extensive paralegal experience that includes conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents, and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources
- Ability to finalize pleadings including tables of content in preferred citation format
- Experience supporting attorneys with case management in complex litigation, including organizing, tracking, and logging extensive document productions
- Experience supporting attorneys in all stages of litigation, up to and including trial.
- High proficiency in Excel
- Experience reviewing documents, discovery, and disclosures
- Familiarity with e-filing systems employed by various courts
- Experience working in a government or public service setting
