Attorney General Phil Weiser announces two senior hires to leadership team

March 18, 2019 (Denver, Colo.) – Attorney General Phil Weiser today announced two new senior appointments to his administration:

David Powell, Equity Shareholder at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C.’s Denver office, will serve as Deputy Attorney General for State Services. Powell has almost 30 years of private practice experience in employment litigation, as well as experience as a former prosecutor in the Denver District Attorney’s Office and former law clerk for the Honorable John L. Kane Jr. in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.

Matt Baca, former Staff Attorney at the Colorado Legal Services Migrant Farm Worker Division, will serve as the Colorado Department of Law’s Director of Community Engagement. Prior to his work at Colorado Legal Services, Baca served as an Associate Attorney at Earthjustice and as law clerk to former Chief U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith (E.D. Va.).

“Both of these leaders will advance our vision of a public law office that is proactively engaged at the state and local level. A strong understanding of our state services and of our local communities is key to our mission of serving as a lawyer for all of the people of Colorado. Both David and Matt have proven their commitment to defending the rule of law and promoting justice among diverse groups of people, in both the public and private sector. They will each bring tremendous value and insight to the work we are doing for the state,” Weiser said.

Matt Baca will begin his duties on March 18, 2019. David Powell will begin on April 22, 2019.
