Attorney General Phil Weiser honors former Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Scott, says his legacy will live on
April 2, 2021—Attorney General Phil Weiser released the following statement on the death of former Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Scott:
“We mourn the passing of another giant who served on the Colorado Supreme Court, former Justice Gregory Scott. As the first and only Black person to serve on the Court, Justice Scott made a lasting impact on the law and residents of the state.
“When the Court invalidated the anti-gay Amendment 2 in its historic Romer v Evans decision, Scott wrote in a concurring opinion that the anti-gay initiative would deny gays and lesbians the right to participate ‘freely and equally in the political process.’ As a law professor at the University of Denver, he inspired scores of law students and he was committed to making the legal profession more diverse. Justice Scott’s legacy will live on in our state and his memory will be a blessing.”
