Safe2Tell reports increase 11% in March
April 11, 2023 (DENVER) — Safe2Tell report volume increased 11% last month when compared to February, according to the monthly report released today.
In March, the Safe2Tell program received 2,630 reports. Suicide threats (303), bullying (255), and school complaints (242) were among the top categories of reports. To date for the 2022-2023 school year, Safe2Tell has received 15,761 reports.
“Last week, Safe2Tell’s student ambassadors visited Safe2Tell at the Colorado Department of Law and shared ways they supported the program in the past year and ways the program has impacted them and their schools,” said Attorney General Phil Weiser. “These dedicated students who volunteer for the program each year help us stay connected to Colorado’s school communities and ensure student voices are incorporated in our outreach and approach. They are a reminder that this program impacts students statewide.”
In this school year, false reports are 2.6% of all reports submitted to Safe2Tell. False reports are those that contain untrue information and are submitted with the intent to harm, injure, or bully another person.
In March, anonymous reports to Safe2Tell from students and other individuals successfully helped protect students’ safety. For example:
- A person reported that a student sent a message to them that made them concerned about the student’s wellbeing. Local teams conducted a welfare check and spoke with the student who stated they were not suicidal but wanted to talk to someone. The student’s parents were notified, and the student is receiving therapy.
- A person reported that a student was inappropriately touching other students at their school. School teams investigated and the allegations were confirmed, leading to school disciplinary action, the student’s parents being notified, and counseling services being offered to the student.
Safe2Tell is a successful violence intervention and prevention program for students to anonymously report threats to their own, and others’, safety. Safe2Tell is not an emergency response unit nor mental health counseling service provider; it is an information pathway for distributing anonymous reports to local law enforcement and school officials pursuant to state law.
To make a report, individuals can call 1-877-542-7233 from anywhere, at any time. Reports also can be made at Safe2Tell.org or through the Safe2Tell mobile app which is available on the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Students can apply to be a Safe2Tell ambassador at safe2tell.org/student-ambassador/.
