Statement from Attorney General Phil Weiser on the passage of fentanyl legislation
May 12, 2022 (DENVER)—Attorney General Phil Weiser released the following statement regarding the passage of HB22-1326, the Fentanyl Accountability and Prevention bill:
“The bipartisan passage of HB 22-1326 is an important step forward to combat deadly fentanyl. This bill’s path through the legislative process brought forward many ideas from parents, experts, law enforcement, and advocates on how best to address this problem.
“Throughout the process, each of us shared the same goal—saving lives. I pushed for several notable improvements to this bill, including ramping up the resources needed to disrupt fentanyl trafficking rings. This bill does not contain everything I would have liked to see, but it makes significant improvements on the harm reduction, public awareness, addiction treatment, and criminal justice fronts. I am grateful for the leadership of Speaker Garnett, Sen. Pettersen, and Sen. Cooke in delivering this comprehensive approach.
“The opioid crisis demands ongoing vigilance and focus as we confront this next chapter, and I look forward to working with the addiction treatment, harm reduction, and law enforcement communities to address the challenges ahead.”
