Attorney General Phil Weiser issues public advisory on new kratom law
Aug. 13, 2025 (DENVER) – Attorney General Phil Weiser has issued a public advisory alerting Coloradans of changes to state law governing products containing kratom. The advisory follows the passage of SB25-072, which became law earlier this year.
“Coloradans should know that newly passed changes to the law governing products that contain kratom leaf and kratom extract are in effect, giving consumers important new protections,” Attorney General Phil Weiser said. “The law institutes new requirements for manufacturers, gives consumers new information about these products, and protects kids. Consumers who believe that any products being sold in Colorado violate these new requirements should file a complaint with my office at StopFraudColorado.gov.”
Kratom, which is an extract derived from the leaves of a Southeast Asian tree, can have intoxicating effects when consumed. This effect is created by the chemicals mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH, which occur naturally in the plant but are often found in highly concentrated amounts in retail kratom products.
Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued warning letters to retailers over kratom products (opens new tab). The FDA sent those warning letters to seven companies the agency said are marketing the products illegally. In addition to increased federal interest in kratom products, several Colorado cities have stricter rules governing them, including outright bans.
The new law governing kratom includes protections against selling or marketing kratom to minors under age 21, and product labeling and packaging requirements including health disclosures.
