The Human Services Unit within the State Services Section is seeking a Senior Paralegal to join its dynamic team! This unit provides legal services to the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) and the Colorado Department of Early Childhood (CDEC), offering meaningful work that directly impacts the lives of Coloradans. The unit litigates in the Office of Administrative Courts, state district court, and federal court to advance the clients’ objectives. The unit advises on federal and state regulations, compliance matters, and provides topical training. These laws play a critical role in protecting some of Colorado’s most vulnerable citizens.

Sign-On bonuses will be paid based on the following timeline:
$500.00 – Time of hire

WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Senior Paralegal will support the Human Services Unit within the State Services Section, playing a critical role in managing legal cases and ensuring attorneys have the resources needed for effective litigation. This position requires strong organizational, case management skills, and attention to detail to support attorneys in administrative, state, and federal court proceedings.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Organize case files, track filings and deadlines, manage discovery materials, and ensure compliance with legal procedures and confidentiality requirements.
- Conduct legal research on evidentiary, procedural, and constitutional issues, compile case law summaries, and assist in drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs under attorney supervision.
- Coordinate witness interviews, arrange depositions, prepare exhibits and demonstrative evidence for trial, and assist with electronic evidence presentation.
- File legal documents, maintain case calendars, communicate with courts, opposing counsel, clients, and witnesses, and assist attorneys with hearing logistics.
- Stay up to date on legal and procedural developments, attend training programs, and contribute to office-wide initiatives.
Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Salary will be paid on a biweekly basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:Paralegal certificate obtained through either an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal studies program or an accredited institution
One (1) year of paralegal experience
SubstitutionsTwo (2) years of work experience in a paralegal capacity which included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources will substitute for the required certificate
A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school may substitute for the required certificate
If qualifying under the substitution, you will be required to provide a copy of your transcripts.
Note: Candidates possessing a foreign degree must submit a translation (evaluation) of their degree from an accredited institution, such as The National Association of Credential Evaluations Services in order to be given credit for the degree.
Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the minimum qualifications, candidates with the following experience and skills may be given preference.

Paralegal experience managing cases, litigation deadlines, and trial preparation

Experience with cases involving children or vulnerable adults

Familiarity with state and federal court rules, appellate procedures, and administrative processes

Experience maintaining litigation dockets and court calendars

Proficiency with legal software such as ProLaw and Relativity

Skilled in electronic document management, formatting, and organization

Legal research and drafting experience for pleadings and motions

Strong proofreading skills and attention to detail

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on tasks and projects
