Attorney General Phil Weiser applauds U.S. Supreme Court’s decision prohibiting job discrimination against LGBTQ Americans under federal Civil Rights Act
June 15, 2020 (DENVER, Colo.)—Attorney General Phil Weiser today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision prohibiting employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964:
“Everyone deserves the right to be their true, authentic selves in their place of work without fear of being fired simply because of who they are or who they love. I applaud the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision affirming that job discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is a form of sex discrimination prohibited under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. It’s an historic day for equality.
“We now have a federal government that has launched a full-frontal assault on the rights of LGBTQ Americans and the gains we have made. When there are efforts to undermine equality for all, we will fight for equality and the American promise of liberty and justice for all.”
Colorado was part of a coalition of 21 states and the District of Columbia that filed a friend of the court brief in support of equality in the workplace discrimination cases.
