Fort Collins smoke shop shut down for illegally selling kratom product to minors

May 27, 2026 (DENVER) – Attorney General Phil Weiser today announced the closure of the Fort Collins-based smoke shop Smokin’ Genie, and the five-year industry ban in the state of Colorado of its owner, Ambreen Vazir, following the illegal sale of kratom product to a minor.

“In Colorado, we are committed to effective oversight over the sale of legal kratom products,” said Weiser. “Permitting the sale of age-restricted products to minors is something we take very seriously. We will continue to hold wrongdoers accountable and protect the public.”

From 2024 to March 2026, AIH Enterprises, LLC, sold tobacco, smoking paraphernalia, and kratom products through their brick-and-mortar shop, Smokin’ Genie. However, a state investigation, in collaboration with Fort Collins Police services, found that Smokin’ Genie failed to properly label their kratom products, and illegally sold kratom to a minor under the age of 21 years old, which are violations of the Colorado Consumer Protection Act.

As part of the settlement (PDF), Smokin’ Genie and its owner agreed to:

  • Fully comply with the Colorado Consumer Protection Act.
  • Cease all operations of their Fort Collins store by May 31.
  • Destroy any remaining inventory, rendering it unusable.
  • Pay $200,000 to the state if they violate the terms of the settlement.

If Vazir chooses to establish a new business selling any type of psychoactive or intoxicating product after the ban expires, they must pay the state $20,000 as a re-entry fee. In such case, Vazir must comply with the Colorado Consumer Protection Act, as well as any other applicable laws, rules and regulations, such as age restrictions related to any specific product.

This settlement is the first action taken by the Attorney General under the recently passed SB25-072 (opens new tab) which regulates the sale of kratom products in Colorado.
