Attorney General Phil Weiser announces settlement with Cobblestone Car Wash for using unfair auto-renewal practices
Aug. 20, 2026 (DENVER) – Attorney General Phil Weiser today announced a settlement with Cobblestone Denver Opco, LLC, after investigating allegations that the car wash company employed unfair automatic renewal practices for their monthly membership fees.
“In Colorado, businesses that offer auto-renewal contracts must provide simple, easy-to-use ways for a customer to cancel,” said Attorney General Weiser. “Causing intentional confusion to make the cancellation process difficult to navigate is unfair for Coloradans and it violates our state’s auto-renewal law.”
Cobblestone provides car washing and detailing services at over 40 locations across Colorado, where customers can access either through monthly membership programs or by paying per service. Once a customer opts into a monthly membership program, they are automatically billed until they cancel the contract. However, Cobblestone failed to provide proper disclosures, notices, terms, and cancellation options for these monthly subscription programs. Between August 2022 and February 2025, over 30,000 Coloradans experienced a monthly subscription rate increase with no notice. Additionally, more than 40,000 customers didn’t receive a receipt for their purchase – as required by law – making the terms of their subscription difficult to find. Without knowledge of the terms or documentation of the services, consumers were locked into these auto-renewal services with little ability to cancel.
As part of the settlement (PDF), Cobblestone has agreed to comply with the Colorado Consumer Protection Act, which includes providing proper documentation of any auto-renewal policies. This includes trial period disclosures, notice of membership price increases at least 25 days in advance, and easy-to-access cancellation options for consumers. Members will now be able to cancel with a one-step online cancellation link on Cobblestone’s website (opens new tab). Additionally, consumers may call 877-516-5377 to reach the Claims Administrator. Cobblestone will also notify monthly members of any plan price changes at least 25 days in advance.
Cobblestone will pay $1,353,465 in restitution to over 70,0000 affected consumers. Cobblestone will manage the payments to consumers. In addition to the restitution payments, Cobblestone has already refunded $253,406 to more than 4,000 consumers over the course of the Attorney General’s investigation. Cobblestone will pay an additional $20,000 for reasonable costs related to the state’s investigation.
This is the latest legal action taken under the state’s auto-renewal consumer rights law, HB21-1239 (opens new tab), passed in 2021 with the support of Attorney General Weiser to help protect Coloradans from harmful automatic renewal contracts.
