Attorney General Phil Weiser statement on SCOTUS opinion striking down law governing firearms on private property

June 25, 2026 (DENVER) – Attorney General Phil Weiser released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Hawaii law governing firearms on private property:

“Today’s decision is disappointing and undermines the ability of states to enact reasonable gun safety measures that respect both community safety and private property rights.

“Hawai’i’s law reflected a straightforward and commonsense principle: private property owners should have meaningful control over whether firearms are carried onto their property. Instead, the court has limited states’ flexibility to adopt practical policies tailored to the needs and preferences of their communities.

“Colorado joined a coalition of states urging the court to uphold this law because we believe states must retain the authority to implement evidence-based gun violence prevention measures that protect people while remaining faithful to the Constitution. At a time when communities across the country continue to experience the devastating consequences of gun violence, restricting the ability of states to act responsibly makes it harder to keep people safe.

“In the face of this setback from the Supreme Court, Colorado will remain steadfast in advancing lawful, effective strategies to reduce gun violence, support responsible gun ownership, and protect the safety and wellbeing of our communities.”
