AG Weiser secures $400k settlement with Dollar General for overcharging customers
Oct. 16, 2025 (DENVER) – Attorney General Phil Weiser announced today that he has reached a settlement with Dollar General after an investigation found the company charged consumers more for products at the register than prices listed on shelves. The company has agreed to correct its business practices, including implementing increased reporting requirements, and to pay a $400,000 fine.
“When shoppers are going to the store, they are entitled to pay the price at the cash register that they see on shelves,” said Attorney General Weiser. “In this case, Dollar General was telling their customers that they would be charged one price and actually charging them another, and I am now holding them accountable for this wrongful conduct. I will always fight for the rights of Colorado consumers and work to make sure they are treated fairly by businesses.”
Dollar General operates more than 20,000 stores across 48 states, including over 70 locations in Colorado. Like all Colorado retailers, Dollar General stores are inspected by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, or CDA, regularly to ensure pricing accuracy. Stores fail inspections when more than 2% of the shelf prices are different from the price at the register.
In 2023, CDA inspectors conducted five inspections at Dollar General stores in Weld and Larimer Counties, of which the company failed three of the inspections. In 2024 and 2025, investigators with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office conducted their own inspections in locations across the state using standards like those used by CDA. Of 18 inspections, the company failed 12.
In addition to the fine, the settlement requires Dollar General to post signs in their stores telling customers it will honor the lowest price in the event of any discrepancy. To improve price accuracy, for the next three years the company has agreed to conduct price audits in all Colorado stores and improve employee training on price accuracy. Dollar General will provide the attorney general’s office with audit reports, including planned corrective actions if any audits reveal additional discrepancies.
Coloradans are encouraged to file a complaint with the attorney general’s office at StopFraudColorado.gov if they see any retailer posting prices on the shelf that differ from what they are charged at the register.
